Why olive oil is recommended

Softens hardened earwax

Olive oil breaks down and loosens compacted wax, helping it move out naturally or making professional removal easier.

Lubricates the ear canal

It reduces friction and irritation, helping wax slide out more easily

Gentle and non‑irritating

Unlike some chemical drops (e.g., sodium bicarbonate or hydrogen peroxide), olive oil is mild and less likely to cause stinging, dryness, or inflammation.

Makes procedures safer

When wax is softened beforehand, microsuction or irrigation is quicker and less uncomfortable.

Moisturises the ear canal

Helps prevent dryness and irritation that can accompany wax build up.

How olive oil helps during removal

Softened wax is less likely to cause pain during extraction.

It reduces the risk of abrasions inside the ear canal.

It may even allow wax to exit on its own, avoiding the need for irrigation or suction.

How to apply the ear drops

1. Warm the bottle slightly

Cold drops can cause dizziness. Hold the bottle in your hands for 1–2 minutes so it reaches body temperature.

2. Lie on your side

The affected ear should face upward. This keeps the drops where they need to be.

3. Pull the ear gently

Adults: Pull the top of the ear up and back.

4. Apply the correct number of drops

Let the drops fall in—don’t push the dropper into the ear. Avoid touching the ear with the bottle tip to keep it clean.

5. Stay in position for 2–5 minutes

This gives the drops time to coat the ear canal instead of running out.

A small cotton ball at the entrance (not pushed inside) can help prevent leakage if needed.

6. Repeat for the other ear if instructed

Only if the drops are meant for both ears.

Extra tips that make a difference

Use drops exactly as directed on the label or by a clinician.

Don’t use them longer than recommended unless advised.

If you feel burning, severe pain, or worsening symptoms, stop and get medical advice.
